Cat Vaccination

Vaccination is one of the most important steps in protecting your cat’s health. It prevents life-threatening diseases, keeps your pet safe at every stage of life and also protects other animals around them.
  • Vaccination helps prevent common feline diseases such as rabies, feline distemper and calicivirus.
  • Kittens should begin their vaccine schedule early to develop strong immunity.
  • Booster shots are required to maintain protection throughout a cat’s life.
  • Some vaccines, such as rabies, may be legally required.

Why Does My Cat Need Vaccination?

Cats, like humans, are exposed to viruses and bacteria every day. They can catch diseases from other cats from sharing food or water bowls or even from germs carried into the house on shoes and clothing. Outdoor cats face even higher risks through contact with strays or contaminated areas. Even indoor cats are not fully safe, as airborne viruses and hidden germs can still reach them. Vaccination is the only way to build strong immunity and protect them from these preventable diseases.

What Vaccines Do Cats Need?

Vaccines are divided into core and non-core types. Core vaccines are essential for all cats, while non-core vaccines are given depending on a cat’s lifestyle, environment and risk factors.

Core Vaccines
(essential for all cats):

FVRCP

Protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.

Rabies

Required by law in many places and vital for safety

Non-Core Vaccines
(given based on lifestyle):

FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus

Recommended for outdoor cats or those in contact with other cats.

Bordetella & Chlamydia

Given if cats are exposed to multi-cat households, catteries or shelters.

Symptoms in Unvaccinated Cats

Without vaccination, cats are highly vulnerable to preventable illnesses. They may show:

Fever, sneezing, coughing, and nasal discharge

Cats with infections often develop a fever and flu-like signs. Sneezing, coughing and a runny nose are common in diseases like cat flu, calicivirus or rhinotracheitis.

Loss of appetite and painful mouth ulcers

ome viral infections cause sores in the mouth and throat, making eating painful. As a result, cats may stop eating or drinking, which can lead to weight loss and dehydration.

Vomiting and diarrhea

Diseases like panleukopenia or calicivirus can upset the digestive system, leading to repeated vomiting or watery stools. This can cause severe dehydration, especially in kittens.

Weakness and lethargy

Sick cats may appear unusually tired, sleep more or lose interest in playing and grooming. Lethargy is a sign the body is fighting infection and that energy levels are dropping.
